Duck hunters set out decoys to attract real ducks along the Outer Banks of North Carolina but the decoys have also attracted national attention. Collectors come from far and wide to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum located in Harker’s Island to purchase authentic decoys and shorebird carvings which have been crafted by members of the Core Sound Carvers Guild. The guild is dedicated to the preservation of the waterfowl carving heritage that runs deep through the history of the Core Sound area. The black-necked stilt which is being donated by the NCVDLS was carved by John Hodge, a member of the guild since 1995. He used tupelo wood to carve the body and a piece of driftwood for the base.  Acrylic paints were used and applied by paintbrush.  A combination of both paintbrush and air brush were used to emphasize special features and glass eyes were inserted to enhance the alertness and expression of the carving. Lastly, several coats of clear lacquer were applied to provide years of protection.

Pendleton Woolen Mills Blanket

From the Pendleton web page: The Pendleton Tribute Series pays homage to the American mills that pioneered the weaving of Indian trade blankets. Oregon City Woolen Mills was known for explosive colors and unique images, such as this dragonfly. The company was perhaps Pendleton’s biggest competitor of the era, creating an extensive range of products for more than 30 years. This “Dragonfly” pattern is a gorgeous example of one of the mill’s unusual color combinations and complex geometric designs. Lightly napped. Felt binding. Woven in our own Northwest mills. 82% pure virgin wool/18% cotton. Dry clean. Made in the USA. 64" x 72". Each blanket comes with a special tribute label and is packed in a vintage-style 1920s box design from our archives.  Retail price: $218
